10 sensory flower seeds to sow in March
Adventures with Flowers TV- Practical tips you can take action on today so that you can feel calmer and happier and get your garden looking bloody gorgeous!
The time has arrived to get seed sowing. Now a small caveat here to say that if you don’t have a greenhouse or cold frame in which to grow seedlings on once they’ve germinated then be very mindful about how many seeds you sow.
It is still too cold for seedlings to be planted out, and the last thing you want is trays of seedlings taking over your windowsills for the next 2 months.
Not least because it will be annoying as hell, the kids will likely find them the most interesting thing in the room to play with and you’ll end up with soil literally fucking everywhere. I’m not bitter at all- can you tell?!
But because your seedlings will get leggy. This is where they have too much heat and not enough light. So they grow and grow towards the light and end up being very tall and spindly. Ideally we want our seedlings to be short and stocky so that their stems can support the weight of the leaves and subsequent flowers.
So in an ideal world we would move our seedlings to an unheated greenhouse or cold frame once they have germinated to allow them to acclimatise a little, but also to give them as much light as possible while turning down the heat!
In reality this isn’t an option for everyone. So sow only a few of each type of seed and once they have germinated move them to a cold windowsill. A spare room, utility room or garage windowsill is ideal. Check in on your seed trays regularly and keep turning the seed trays every few days so your seedlings grow straight.
But what seeds to sow right now?
I’m sharing my 10 must sow sensory flower seeds in this week’s episode. I use all of these flowers in my arrangements throughout the summer and autumn.
