6 things that are better for my mental health and the world than going to the Chelsea Flower Show
Hi darling, I’m Kendall, a horticultural therapist. Here on my Substack, I share tips on how to use your garden to grow your personal power in a world that tries to keep women stuck, exhausted & burnt out. Come grab your trowel and join the rebellion, we’ve got a patriarchy to dismantle.
Welcome to the Seed, the place where you’ll learn to resource yourself in the garden using 5 minute mindful gardening activities so that you can unlock more joy in your life.
One of the world’s most famous flower shows is happening in London this week.
I visited The RHS Chelsea Flower Show once 6 years ago while pregnant with my eldest daughter and I had a lovely day but a few things didn’t sit right with me.
So I thought I’d share the things I’m doing instead this week that will be infinitely better for my mental health and the world. In case you fancy joining me.
#1 Spending a day at the spa with a friend instead of having to spend my whole day masking around people I don’t know.
#2 Getting in my own garden to calm my mind instead of jostling with a thousand other people for a tiny glimpse of a garden that I’m not allowed to go in, to feel the healing benefits of nature.
#3 Writing about gardening on Substack and getting paid for it instead of accepting a ticket to Chelsea and being expected to work for free to advertise it.
#4 Setting up a new water collection system to do my small bit to combat the many thousands of litres of water being used this week at Chelsea to keep the plants looking good.
#5 Using my voice to advocate for marginalised groups rather than virtue signalling for an organisation that doesn’t want to make meaningful change and include all people.
#6 Helping people from all walks of life learn to garden rather than gatekeeping gardening as an elitist activity for the rich.
If you want to learn to garden as a way to connect with Nature and improve your wellbeing you don’t need to fork out over £130 for a ticket to Chelsea Flower Show.
You can come and take the first steps in to your garden with me as your guide in The Great Garden Rebellion.
N.B. A small number of fully and part funded places on The Great Garden Rebellion are available for those who need them. Please email me hello@adventureswithflowers.com to apply.
Yes to this list! I thought the statement that Tayshan Hayden-Smith made this week was very powerful as well. Hopefully more people will stop and question the event instead of being swept up in the media coverage and celeb spotting.
I could not agree with you more, especially No.6 👏
