How to feel good about your garden no matter what it looks like
Because I'm not in the business of giving you another thing to beat yourself up over- especially not right now!
3 minute read
It’s 9.37pm and I’m laying on a blow up bed in a tent being kicked in the back by my overexcitable 5 year old who is far too distracted to go to sleep.
It’s 6.15am and I’m being talked at far too loudly for the time of day, I’ve spent most of the night awake as ‘someone’ nicked my duvet.
The whinging and whining at 2.30pm because she kept us both up most of the night and she’s ‘tired’.
Yeah aren’t we all babe!
The joys of mine and Arwen’s first camping trip which I returned from yesterday.
Never has my bed been such a welcome delight!
But when people ask me what it was like, I can’t help but remember these things too:
It’s 9.37pm and having cooked our own sausages on the barbie, snuggled up in our dressing gowns to drink hot chocolate and toast marshmallows over a fire we’re settled in our tent listening to the sounds of life and people having fun around us.
It’s 6.15am and those tiny warms hands encircle me and a little face appears over my shoulder with glee about the day ahead where ‘it’s just me and you mummy!’
It’s 2.30pm and with a belly full of Wagamamas (Chilli squid and chicken katsu curry if you’re wondering) we climb up to the top deck of the park and ride bus to discover that the front seat is free! Cue much excitement and giggling from both of us as we get a glance into the lives and gardens of those we drive past.
The same snapshots in time, but remembered by me so differently depending on where my head is at.
It’s easy when you’re tired and overwhelmed and doing the summer holiday juggle for your brain to head to the negative.
But I want to encourage you to look for the positive in each situation.
Especially when it comes to your garden right now.
With 2 weeks away and the kids at home most days ever since, I am struggling to keep up with everything.
My garden activities list is probably longer than its ever been and when I see the amount of bindweed threatening to take over the garden, panic washes over me like I’ve never felt it before.
So I pause, exhale loudly through my mouth and look for the moments of joy in the garden.
Here’s just a few that I’ve found this week:
So.many.plums
A handful of nectarines- juicy and sweet once they ripen
The first cosmos flowers
A beautiful bunch gathered for a friend
So put down your phone/ laptop/ tablet. Yep right now. Head out into the garden, breathe out loudly through your mouth and let your eyes find moments of joy.
What did you find? Let me know in the comments.
