Mother’s day. A wonderful excuse to celebrate the Mother’s in your life, or be celebrated if you are a Mother. But it’s a tricky day for some. Those who are missing Mothers or children no longer with us, those who long to be Mothers but for whom it has not happened. And it all feels a little trite to be celebrating when Mothers in Gaza are living through hell right now.

Much like my relationship with International Women’s day. I believe that women and mothers should be celebrated every day. Not in some big flashy way, but you know equal pay (Mothers earn £4.44 an hour less than Fathers), equal opportunities in the workplace and parity in the domestic and mental load.

I read a fascinating post from a neuroscientist that I follow that said that the stress of the mental load effectively puts women’s brains into limp mode severely impacting our brain’s executive function. Is it any wonder then that we constantly forget things, snap at the kids, struggle to access creativity when we need to and feel overwhelmed almost constantly?

So this Mother’s day, here’s to asking your partner to shoulder some of that ongoing mental load so you can get out in the garden regularly and quiet your mind. Here’s to doing something not because it has an end result, because it’s productive and valued by society. But doing it for the joy of it, for the experience for the way it makes your heart soar.

Because when you’re happy, everyone around you is happy. And what more could you ask for on Mother’s day.

This week’s activities are below so grab your diary and pencil them in and if you can find 5 minutes today to get outside, even better!

p.s. don’t forget the waitlist for my Spring Solstice Sale is now open, so if you’re ready for some regular time for you in your garden and you want first dibs (some of the offers have limited spaces) then reply WAITLIST to me now.
