I could feel the sweat beading on my upper lip. ‘I’m gonna have to stop’ I groaned as the room span.

‘Ok no problem’ the friendly phlebotomist said and removed the needle from my arm.

I’ve always been rubbish at having blood taken. Weird for someone who has attended many a gory crime scene and examined endless blood soaked items of clothing. Whether its because its my own blood, or because my veins are so rubbish it takes an age of poking around to find one thats going to give them what they need and my mind has time to dwell on what’s happening.

The Seed is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

As I lay with my feet up on the bed and she went in for round two, my thoughts turned to how jam packed my week had been and how up against it I was feeling. What with doctors appointments, nativities to attend and the final gifts to buy which meant a trip into town (horror of horrors), I had not managed to get done half of the work things I wanted to sort before, of course an early finish for the kids on Wednesday (which i’d completely forgotten about!). I could feel the panic rising.

No matter how counter intuitive it felt, I knew the best thing I could do would be to get out in my garden and find some head space and reset. So that’s what I did. I planted up the containers either side of my front door and made sure to add some gorgeous sensory plants. So that when I can only carve out a couple of minutes as I wait for the kids to get their bloody shoes on, I can engage my senses and find a minute of calm amongst the plants.
